Elif Selen Batigün’s article in Yildirim Beyazit Hukuk Dergisi addresses the legal character of documentary letters of credit as a method of payment in international trade and the law applicable to that mechanism from both substantive-law and private-international-law perspectives. It explains that documentary credits are generally operated under the ICC’s UCP 600 rules, but that where those rules do not apply, each legal relationship within the credit arrangement must be assessed separately for foreign element and applicable law, with particular reference to Article 24 of the Turkish Code on Private International Law (MÖHUK).
